Sustainability Committee

If you’re interested in seeing greater environmental responsibility in Somersworth, you are not alone. In 2011, the Somersworth Sustainability Committee was established and continues to serve as a resource and clearinghouse for the City Council and City Departments concerning issues of environmental sustainability.

This Committee develops recommendations for the implementation of the goals set in the Master Plan related to sustainability. These recommendations are to prepare the City for, and reduce the City’s contribution to, climate change. This group identifies existing sustainable practices and identify areas needing improvement. The Committee’s duty is to promote public awareness of sustainability issues.

This group assists in coordinating efforts of various committees and departments in implementing sustainability projects. Past contributions made by the Committee include anti-idling policies for City vehicles and on city property; improving reduce/reuse/recycle practices within the City; reduction of energy consumption from the City Council decision to convert all street lights to LED technology; and the City’s investment in the wastewater treatment plant to increase efficiency of water consumption & waste production in municipal buildings.

This Committee is made up of 5 members and 2 alternate members, we currently have 1 opening as an alternate. As active volunteers, we always encourage involvement of the community at large in the activities of the Committee. Our meetings are always open to the public and posted under Agendas.
