In Memory of

Officer Donald R. Kowalski

National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial

On September 4th 1979 at approximately 4:54 AM, a member of the Somersworth Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle that was reportedly stolen out of the City of Dover.  The short pursuit through Somersworth and Dover ended tragically near the intersection of High Street and Pinecrest Drive (now Crest Drive), in Somersworth.  The operator of the suspect vehicle, a 16-year-old juvenile, had crashed into Officer Kowalski’s cruiser, which was pulling out into the roadway in an attempt to intercept the suspect vehicle and put an end to the pursuit.  As a direct result of the crash, Officer Kowalski succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead at the Wentworth Douglass Hospital a short time later.  Officer Kowalski was twenty-five years old and had only been with the department for four months.  Our thoughts and prayers will always go out to Officer Kowalski and his family.  May he rest in Peace.
